How to stick tiles on the ceiling correctly

How to stick tiles on the ceilingHow to glue tiles on the ceiling: methods, technologies

If you need to quickly and inexpensively tidy the ceiling, pay attention to the tile made of polystyrene or polystyrene. If you approach the matter correctly, you can get a very decent result. About how to glue the tiles to the ceiling correctly, what to use for this and we will talk further.

Kinds

If you look closely, for all its similarity, the tiles on the ceiling have significant differences. This is not about drawing and shape, but about the appearance – density, smoothness of the surface and other “little things” on which the appearance and service lines of this type of finish depend. This is explained by the use of different materials and technologies:

Extruded. The surface is smooth, without visible grains, the thickness is small 2-3 mm, the material itself is dense, can be painted in different colors, including imitation marble or wood. This type of tile does not paint on the ceiling – the paint “rolls”. It is made from expanded polystyrene. Easy to care for, easy to glue, but the cost of this type of ceiling tile is high.

Foam or stamped. It looks more loose, granularity is clearly visible. The surface is more porous, clogged with dirt, it is difficult to care. Therefore, after gluing it is desirable to paint it, but not with an aqueous emulsion, but with an acrylic dispersion. The thickness of the plates is 6-12 mm. The drawing is applied to a foam sheet under a press – squeezed out. It is inconvenient to work with it – it often breaks down, crumpled. When purchasing, take at least 10% of the stock. Its plus is the lowest price.

Injection tiles. Expanded polystyrene is “baked” in a special form. The main difference is a clear picture. For the price and characteristics – the average between those described above. It’s good to work with it, you can paint it if you wish.

The easiest way to glue and care for extruded polystyrene tiles. The second quality is injection, and the most “capricious” in the care and installation – stamped. Now you can choose the type of tile yourself, but the look remains.

Ceiling tiles are most often produced in the form of squares with a side of 5 ° cm. There are non-standard options – rectangular. By the type of surface of the tile there is a piping that forms a clear seam at the junction, there are seamless options. The edges of the seamless slabs can be flat or twisty.

The principle of gluing does not change from the type of edge; only the appearance of the product changes. There are a lot of design options for this type of finishing materials. There are geometric, floral, without a pattern, about with a diverse relief. In general, there are a lot of options.

Calculation of quantity and selection features

Before gluing the tile to the ceiling, it is necessary to calculate its quantity. It’s not hard. Most often it is produced with a side of 50 cm. This means that 4 tiles are used per 1 square meter. If you know the area of ??the room, easily determine the required number of tiles: multiply the area by 4. For example, the room has dimensions of 3.2 m * 2.8 m. The total area is 8.96 m2. Round, we get 9 m2. To calculate the number of tiles, multiply by 4: 4 pcs. * 9 m2 = 36 pcs. It will take some more to trim, part may be broken. Therefore, the total number is increased by several pieces. How much specifically – you need to look at the layout, but usually 10-20% of the stock is enough.

To make the ceilings made of foam plates look beautiful, when choosing a material, pay attention not only to the appearance and type. Carefully evaluate the geometry: all tiles must be the same size, the same thickness, angles – exactly 90 °. The quality of the picture should be stable, clear, on the side faces should not be inflows, heterogeneities. If you choose pressed plates, pay attention to the size of the “grain”. The smaller it is, the better.

What to glue

Most often, ceiling tiles are glued to glue such as “Titan”, “Naset”, “Moment” or liquid nails. All of them are not bad, but with their use it is necessary to hold the tile for a while. You have to hold from 3-5 seconds to several tens, but this is not very convenient. The Moment is the fastest to catch, but it’s also imperfect: you have to withstand the applied glue for some time in the air.

In addition to these compounds, there are mastics for ceiling tiles. They are sold in small buckets, are pasta. It’s easier to work with this type of adhesive, as they are more “sticky”. The tile smeared with this compound adheres to the ceiling; it does not need to be kept for so long as it is smeared with ordinary glue.

All the above options are for flat or almost flat ceilings. Where there are differences (joints of plates), this method is not suitable. If the ceiling is uneven, you can glue the tile on gypsum putty) or glue like “Perlfix”. The starting or finishing composition depends on the required layer, the finish is suitable if the height difference is not more than 5 mm, with a larger layer, take the starting one, but it is better to align this ceiling or use another system (for example, armstrong is also inexpensive and fast way to tidy up frankly curved ceiling).

Both of these materials allow you to align the ceiling and glue the ceiling tiles at the same time. Only the method of gluing changes, and dramatically (more on this in more detail below).

Foundation preparation

Before gluing the tiles to the ceiling, the surface must be prepared. To begin with, delete everything that may fall off. If there is a significant layer of whitewash on the ceiling, it is better to remove it – although the ceiling tile weighs little, it can fall with whitewash over time. Therefore, we clean it with a spatula in dry form or wash it off with water. If in the process of stripping large “craters” have formed, it is better to repair them. It is easier to use starter putty or the remnants of any plaster composition for this.

If the base is loose, loose, you can not do without a primer. For concrete it is better to choose “concrete contact”, for a gypsum base – any composition of deep penetration. After drying, you can proceed to gluing polystyrene or foam tiles to the ceiling.

Placement methods and layout

Squares on the ceiling of polystyrene or polystyrene are placed with faces along the walls or diagonally. When gluing diagonally, the material consumption is greater – more scraps and not all of them can be used, but visually it looks better – it is more difficult to notice the seams.

Gluing most often begins from a chandelier. In this case, it is easier to “fit in”, since the edges of the plates can be cut a little, and the resulting slit will then close the cartridge from the chandelier. But not all rooms have a chandelier – often there are several lamps and they can be located on the walls. Then they start gluing from one of the walls, most often from the opposite entrance. With this approach, most likely the extreme row will be cut off, and near the entrance it will not be so noticeable.

If you need to glue the tiles on the ceiling from the chandelier, marking is necessary. In a square room, everything is simple – we find the center, we start from it. To do this, take a masking cord, one end to one corner, the other to the opposite, pulling the cord and letting go, we get a line on the ceiling. Repeat the operation with another pair of angles. They found the center, it’s easy to glue tiles from it. For diagonal gluing, there are already guides, and for parallel gluing, two more strips will have to be made – through the center to the opposite walls (in the figure above).

But this is a very rare case. More often the rooms are rectangular, and the chandelier is not in the middle of the ceiling. Therefore, you will have to do more complex markup.

To begin with, we also find the center of the room (masking cord along the diagonals). If it coincides with the place of attachment of the chandelier, wonderful, from him and “dance”. If not, move the start point to the chandelier. Further markup is the same. We measure the distance from the point of start of installation to the nearest wall. Using this value, draw the squares as shown in the figure above (use a masking cord). After diagonals, we get guides for laying flow tiles. Align the edge of the first row. The more accurately we expose this row, the easier it will be to glue the tiles to the ceiling further.

How to glue tiles on the ceiling: two technologies

Foam or polystyrene tiles on the ceiling attracts by the fact that it allows you to quickly and without high costs to put in order far from ideal ceiling. If the ceiling is relatively even, the tile is glued to a special glue. It is applied in a thin layer, but provides a secure hold.

With uneven ceilings, this method will not work: the tile simply does not stick with large differences or the view will be deplorable. leveling is not always time, desire or opportunity. Moreover, often this finishing option is considered temporary, then planning to make a suspended or suspended ceiling. Therefore, spending time and money does not make sense. In this case, another technology is used – on the adhesive composition for drywall or putty. They work no worse than glue, at the same time leveling the base.

Before starting work, unpack all the material, make sure that it is the same color, size. If there are irregularities, sagging, they are cut off with a blade or a sharp knife. Now you can proceed with the installation of ceiling tiles on the ceiling.

How to glue on a flat ceiling

If the ceiling is even, ordinary glue is used for polystyrene or foam tiles, the technology is as follows:

Spread a thin strip of glue around the perimeter of the square and diagonally. The edges of the tiles do not need to be oiled.

We put the tile in place, smooth it by hand.

We hold for some time – until the glue “seizes”.

Repeat the same with the next tile. We apply it to the edge already pasted, if necessary, combine the pattern, and then press the rest. Docking should be carried out as accurately and accurately as possible so that subsequently no steps form. Align the edges to the nearest millimeter.

The main thing is to combine the edges and the pattern

Repeat with the rest of the fragments.

If necessary, tiles on the ceiling can be trimmed. Doing it conveniently on

As you can see, everything is very simple and these are all the rules on how to glue tiles on the ceiling. Only one caveat: to press one square to another must be tight. If you have already glued it, and there is a gap, you can move it by pressing the wooden plank to the free edge. When you try to do this with your hands, you can break the polystyrene or polystyrene, and it is easier to achieve the desired with an even bar.

If the ceiling is uneven

If the ceiling has significant irregularities, gluing the tile to ordinary glue will not work. To remove significant differences use glue for drywall or putty. The mixture is diluted to a pasty state, applied to the ceiling, grooves are formed using a notched trowel. The amount of glue depends on the total curvature, but it is advisable to start with a minimum layer. The area on which glue is applied at a time is approximately 4 fragments. During this time, the composition will not have time to grab, and to align such a fragment is not difficult.

Tile is laid on the glue layer. It adheres well, moves without problems. Combining the edges of the stacked fragments, take a rule or a building level (preferably one and a half meters) and expose the tiles in the same plane. Just press the fragments harder in the right place.

Then again the composition is applied to the ceiling, and, again, about 4 tiles. All of them are exposed in one plane or at least so that there were no sharp differences. Only in this case it is necessary to ensure that the necessary layer of glue does not grow too quickly – it is better not to apply more than 3-5 mm, otherwise everything will fall.

Seam cleaning and sealing

You know how to glue the tiles to the ceiling, but some nuances remain, without which knowledge a decent result is unattainable. When working on the front side of the tile often gets the adhesive. It must be removed immediately and completely. You can use a sponge or a soft non-shedding rag. Scour the surface immediately after putting the fragment in place. In a few minutes, this will not be possible to do and traces will remain. Therefore, while working, keep a bucket of water and a sponge / rag on hand.

If there are small voids between the plates, you can fill them with the same mastic or putty (if it is white), only immediately remove the excess. Another option is a white acrylic sealant. It perfectly conceals all cracks, adheres well to polystyrene and polystyrene. Thin slots can be filled with a rubber spatula, and the excess can also be immediately rubbed with a damp cloth.

How to glue the ceiling tiles with your own hands: step by step instructions

Styrofoam ceiling tiles are the most common, affordable way to upgrade a ceiling. Everyone tries to approach this responsibly and individually. Before gluing the ceiling tile, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work so that the beautiful ceiling coating, with the original finish, pleases the eye for many years. Choosing the finishing option, everyone tries to approach this responsibly and individually. He tries to get acquainted with the varieties of this material, the rules for calculating the required amount, with which glue to glue, as well as some nuances of combining tiles with the interior of the room.

Types of Ceiling Tiles

In the construction market, ceiling tiles are represented by the following varieties that differ in their production methods:

Pressed tiles for the ceiling are made by stamping from polystyrene blocks. The thickness of the finished product min – 6 mm, max – 8 mm.

Extruded blocks are made from a polystyrene strip by pressing. They have a shiny smooth surface. The plates can be structured into a marble slab, a cut of a tree trunk and other natural materials.

For the manufacture of injection tiles for the ceiling, a method is used in which the feedstock is sintered. As a result, the product has the correct shape with a deep pattern. Its thickness is from 9, but not more than 14 mm.

The choice of ceiling tiles according to physical parameters

In order to properly glue the ceiling tiles, at the time of purchase you need to pay special attention to the geometry of the product. If a tile is selected with squares, then all its corners should correspond to the required parameters, that is, equal 90º. The slightest deviation in the future will lead to the formation of uneven seams. The corners of ceiling tiles must not be rounded or wrinkled.

Another indicator when choosing a ceiling tile is the material from which it is made. When buying polystyrene tiles, you need to ensure that the edges do not crumble, and all grains are the same in size. Better quality is considered one in which the grain size is especially small. Expanded polystyrene plates should not break under its own weight if it is held at any of the corners by weight. The selected ceiling tile should have a clear pattern. No flaws are allowed, any minor inaccuracy or dent will immediately attract attention.

Calculation of the required amount of material and the choice of glue

After choosing the type of ceiling tile according to its physical parameters and external design, it is necessary to determine how much tile is required for the entire ceiling area. More experienced owners immediately buy 10-15% more, in case of rejection due to broken corners or errors during trimming. In general, the calculation is not complicated. You need to know the area of ??the ceiling and the size of each element. Typically, ceiling tiles are available in sizes of side faces 50-50 cm. If the ceiling dimensions are not a multiple of the length of the side of the tile, then there will be gaps at the edges of the ceiling when finishing. Therefore, when calculating this nuance must be taken into account.

Advice of an experienced craftsman : if you want to save on glue, instead of liquid nails, it is better to use transparent glue with a more liquid “rubber” base. Its consumption is significantly lower. But for a firm hold, be sure to dry the adhesive already applied to the tile a little.

After calculating the required number of tiles, you need to decide what glue to glue. A lot of people use “Titan”, “Econaset”, “Liquid nails”, “Moment”. They adhere well to any surface and dry quickly. After gluing, the tile holds tight. Only for this it needs to be pressed for a few seconds to the ceiling.

Work order

Many owners of apartments and private houses prefer to stick ceiling tiles with their own hands. Therefore, it is important for them to know that work should begin with marking the center of the finish area. To do this, from diagonally located corners, it is necessary to stretch two threads. Their intersection is the desired center. If a chandelier hangs in the room, then you can start work from this point. In this case, the docking angles at the lamp wire are slightly cut off. As a result, they will be closed with a curly glass of the rod of the chandelier.

Many start work from one of the walls and row after row of tiles. This option is the easiest and fastest. But here there is a slight nuance. The first row is best laid from the wall opposite the window or front door. Then gaps that are covered by partial fragments will not be so noticeable.

Before proceeding to the sticker, the ebbs at the edges of the product must be carefully cut. At the same time, the surface of the ceiling will be perfectly smooth, without seams. It is also necessary to strictly observe the symmetry of the pattern at the joints of the tiles. The slightest deviation violates the integrity and beauty of the finish.

There are relatively many options for the location of ceiling tiles relative to the walls of the room. The most common are parallel and diagonal with respect to the faces of the intersection of walls and ceiling. You can choose plain, color and combination tiles. Of the combined styling options, the following are most often practiced:

  • alternating or intersecting diagonals,
  • staggered
  • a snake
  • around the perimeter of the ceiling or in its center, etc.

At the end of the work, skirting boards are installed around the entire perimeter. They are glued with the same glue as the tile itself.

Options for gluing ceiling tiles to whitewash

We will glue directly on whitewashing, so you should choose one of two ways:

The first is that a primer is applied over the old whitewash. It is absorbed into the layer of the old coating and seizes with the main surface of the ceiling. Then you need to wait until the primer has completely dried and proceed to the finish.

The second method involves the partial scraping of the falling off whitewashed layer with a spatula. Subsequently, a layer of glue of a larger thickness is applied to the underside of the tile, and it is pressed for several minutes to the place of gluing. The glue is absorbed through a thin layer of whitewash remaining on the ceiling and seizes with the ceiling.

How to glue ceiling tiles with your own hands

Renovation of the ceiling is time-consuming and expensive. In addition to tiles, you can arrange tension and suspension structures, mirror panels of various configurations and sizes. Here everything is decided by the financial possibilities and fantasies of the owner.

How to stick tiles on the ceiling: correctly stick on an uneven ceiling, pasting with ceramic and foam tiles

It is not necessary to finish the ceiling with expensive material. There is a budget material with which you can get a good result. These are foam panels. In the article we will tell you how to stick the tiles on the ceiling, in what sequence you need to perform installation in order to get a high-quality coating.

Foam tile

Before pasting the ceiling with tiles, you need to decide on the choice of material. For finishing the ceiling surface, the following types of material are on sale:

extruded foam panels made by stamping. The material has a porous structure, which is clogged with dirt during operation. It is recommended that after installing the panels, paint them with acrylic paint. The material is inexpensive, brittle and creasing, inconvenient to work with. Choosing this type of coating, you should take the material with a margin of about 10%. The thickness of a single panel is from 6 to 12 mm;

extruded. The panels are small in thickness, only 2-3 mm, but quite dense and expensive. Profiles imitating wood or natural stone are produced. Polystyrene foam material is easy to care for, but cannot be painted. Paint literally rolls off a smooth surface;

injection. The difference from other types of tiles in a clearly visible pattern, which is obtained during production. The material can be painted, not difficult to mount. The cost is average.

It is easiest to glue the ceiling with extruded tiles. This coating is easier to care for.

The usual shape of the panels is square. But, non-standard, rectangular panels are produced. You can glue the ceiling with seamless tiles, the edges of which can be wavy or even.

Foam ceiling tiles are considered the most popular material for gluing ceilings. But there are other types of tiles made of the following materials:

  • Such profiles visually increase the height and area of ??the room;
  • a tree. Environmentally friendly profiles;
  • This type is used in rooms with high humidity;
  • Spectacular, durable and non-combustible material, but very expensive.

When choosing profiles for the ceiling, pay attention to how the material is combined with the interior and decor.

How to choose a tile?

To properly glue the ceiling with tiles, you need to correctly select the material.

When choosing, you need to pay attention not only to the type of panels. Each element should be of the same shape, size and thickness. Angles should be 90 degrees. During installation, if the panel does not meet the requirements, the surface will be flawed.

When choosing a foam tile for gluing the ceiling, carefully inspect the corners of the product. They should not crumble. The structure of each panel should be fine-grained and uniform, and the picture should be clearly visible.

Calculation of the amount of material

Before gluing the tiles to the ceiling, it is necessary to calculate the amount of material for decoration.

The standard side of the tile is 50 cm. This number indicates that you need 4 panels per 1 square meter. To calculate the required amount of material, it is necessary to multiply the area of ??the room by 4. The resulting figure must be rounded up.

Get material 10 or 15% more than the required amount. Additional tiles will go to trim and corners.

To glue the tiles to the ceiling, you will need glue or liquid nails. You can take an adhesive with a rubber base, the consumption will be small. Use also such types of glue, as the Titan and the Moment.

Ceramic tile

In rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms or kitchens, you can glue ceramic tiles on the ceiling. The material, in addition to moisture resistance, is durable and has a long service life.

First you need to choose the right material, which must be of high quality and meet certain requirements:

the dimensions of each panel should coincide diagonally, literally up to a millimeter;

to check the panels, you need to put two pieces face or back to each other. In this position, the corners of the panels are inspected, which must coincide. Even with a slight discrepancy of 0.5 mm, it will not be possible to perform high-quality gluing of the ceiling with tiles;

Further, the material is checked as follows. The panels are laid on a flat surface, and inspected so that there are no gaps under them.

No need to check all the panels, and this is impossible. It is enough to check several panels from different packages.

To stick ceramic tiles to the ceiling, you must do the following:

prepare work surface. Removed the old ceiling. This can be wallpaper, paint, whitewashing, layers of old plaster. Regardless of the type of old coating, it must be completely removed. The cleaned surface is primed and primed;

then a cement-based mortar is mixed for sticking the tiles to the ceiling. A solution in the form of a path is poured onto the surface of the ceiling, and a profile that acts as a beacon is attached;

You can apply the solution not on the ceiling, but directly on the tiles. After applying the solution, it needs to be smoothed out with a spatula, combed;

tile with the applied solution is applied to the surface and pressed for shrinkage;

a rubber spatula to remove excess solution that protrudes along the edges of the profile;

during the installation of each subsequent element, special crosses are put in the seams to get the perfect angle. Thus, the tile will not move to the side;

usually the last tiles are cut before laying. Used tile cutter or grinder.

After installing all the tiles, wipe the lined surface with a damp sponge or rags. If this is done after the solution has dried, then more efforts will have to be made.

After gluing the tiles to the ceiling and completely drying the surface, they begin to rub the seams. For this purpose, a special mixture is purchased. Before grouting, the joints are cleaned with a spatula.

The grout mixture is applied with a rubber trowel with crushing movements. When the grout dries, the surface is wiped with a sponge.

Before installation, you can watch a video on how to properly paste ceramic tiles on the ceiling, and once again study the step-by-step instructions.

Sticky on the uneven ceiling

If you are going to glue the ceiling with foam tiles, a problem such as an uneven work surface often arises. If you do not solve the problem, then the installation simply will not succeed.

You can, of course, stick the ceiling plate on an uneven ceiling, if it is made of expanded polystyrene. This option is possible with small surface defects and reliable fixation of profiles.

To stick the ceiling tiles on an uneven ceiling, you need to consider the following points:

the tile is selected in size so that the dimensions of the surface irregularities are taken into account;

it is better to stay on embossed profiles, because irregularities with this texture will be less noticeable.

To save time and additional materials, you can glue the ceiling tiles on uneven ceilings. Perhaps, if you do not look closely at the ceiling, this option will even look. In this case, the floor and walls should be even.

But, if you need to get a high-quality result, then gluing the ceiling tiles on an uneven ceiling is not worth it. If the tiles are metal or ceramic, then they will not hold on to an uneven base coat.

But, even lightweight foam profiles are preferably mounted on a prepared, level surface. You can use two options. Either the ceiling surface is completely cleaned of the old coating and leveled, or a metal or foam plastic frame is mounted. The tile is mounted on a frame structure.

Next, we consider in more detail how to properly tile the ceiling, if the surface is defective.

Putty leveling

To work you need the following tools:

  • putty knife;
  • beacons;
  • ruler

To prepare the ceiling for gluing with a foam tile or a profile of another material, you must perform the following steps:

it is necessary to completely remove the old coating using a dry or wet technique. The old coating usually crumbles, leaks, mold traces, cracks and crevices are visible. It is advisable to remove the old layer of plaster;

Next, you need to choose how to process the ceiling before gluing the ceiling tiles. Usually, a high-quality antiseptic solution is used to protect against various microorganisms, which fills the pores of the working surface;

the ceiling cleaned from the old coating is primed. A deep penetration primer is used;

the next step is the application of the starting layer of putty. Instead of putty, a cement solution with the addition of glue for elasticity is suitable;

further mark the places under the beacons;

markup is in progress. With a spatula, along the marking lines, a putty or cement mortar path is applied. The beacon is installed on the track and fixed by the rule. A thread is pulled from the edge of the first beacon, and the remaining marks are set, allowing the tile to be properly glued to the ceiling;

putty is applied between the beacons, then alignment with the rule is performed;

if irregularities appear during the work, then they need to be wiped with a grater;

after the putty layer has dried, the beacons can be removed. Remove the beacons a day after applying the plaster;

at the final stage, the surface is rubbed with a wet grater.

You can glue the foam plate on the shelf on the third or fourth day after the completion of surface leveling.

Foam frame for mounting tiles on uneven surfaces

The frame is suitable for ceiling surfaces consisting of separate blocks. In this case, the sealed joints protrude, and it will not be possible to properly tile the ceiling.

The frame is mounted as follows:

  • foam sheets are cut into strips;
  • strips are glued to the ceiling at such a distance so that one tile can be fixed on two foam strips;
  • where the sections of the ceiling are uneven, notches are cut out on the foam strips.

To make foam strips of the required width, you need to consider the size of the profiles.

Installation of a foam plastic frame is considered a simpler option for preparing the work surface. No need to wait until the filler coat dries, as when leveling the ceiling. All the work can be done in a day.

But, this option will be less reliable. In addition, only a foam tile can be glued to the ceiling on a foam frame. The design will not withstand heavy ceramic or metal profiles.

Mounting

After leveling the working surface, you can proceed to pasting the ceiling with foam tiles.

There are the following options for the location of profiles:

  • parallel to the walls. The option is possible only with perfectly even walls;
  • diagonal sticking;
  • pasting with a rhombus. The corner of the profile for decoration is fixed in the center.

After selecting a method, the following installation steps are performed:

  • marking on the ceiling;
  • glue is applied to the first tile. The adhesive composition is applied along the perimeter and diagonals of the profile;
  • the tile smeared with glue is applied in the right place and pressed;
  • other profiles are fixed similarly to the first;
  • after mounting all the tiles, the joints are putty or rubbed with silicone-based sealant.

At the end of installation, ceiling skirtings are mounted.

You can see the video below, how to glue the ceiling with ceiling tiles.

Whitewashed ceiling

You can finish the ceiling surface with tiles on almost any base coat. But, gluing the ceiling tiles to the whitewashed ceiling is not always possible. In this matter, it all depends on the following points:

  • type of whitewash;
  • features of applying the old coating.

If chalky whitewashing was applied, then it is better to refuse the tile as a ceiling finish. Material will certainly begin to come off.

Next, we will tell you how to stick the tile on the ceiling after whitewashing based on lime. Old whitewashing will have to be removed if:

  • the old finish easily lags the surface;
  • on the ceiling are several lime whitewash layers let’s consider how to glue the tiles on the ceiling to whitewash in more detail.
Preparatory work

Preparatory activities consist of the following:

  • run your hand over the old whitewash, and make sure that the whitewash is not smeared;
  • then the surface is brushed, then wiped with a damp sponge;
  • after the previous steps, you need to check once again how well the old layer holds. Use a spatula to remove areas of whitewash that are suspicious. If the lime begins to fall away, then you need to remove these parts, capturing a few extra centimeters.

The preparatory measures are completed, and you can begin the primer work.

Priming

Thanks to the primer, adhesion between the base ceiling surface and the adhesive is improved.

The primer is applied as follows:

  • before using a deep penetration primer, the composition is shaken and poured into a special container from which it can be taken with a roller;
  • the roller is impregnated with a primer and squeezed slightly. Then you need to walk along the cleaned whitewash surface of the ceiling with a roller. The layer is applied thinly. To get to hard-to-reach areas, use a brush;
  • you need to wait for the complete drying of the soil layer, then apply a second layer.

If large defects are found on the surface, then they must be putty.

Markup

The quality of the future finish of the foam lining depends on the correctly applied marking.

The markup is done like this:

  • mark the point at the intersection of the diagonals of the ceiling. This will be the center mark;
  • then lines are marked along which foam tile should be aligned. The location of these lines depends on the laying method.

You can not mark the entire ceiling surface. You can mark only two center lines, then align the remaining profiles with them.

Sticking

Before installing the panels, you need to cut off the burrs from them. As an adhesive, it is better to take liquid nails or glue from polymers.

Installation is as follows:

  • installation starts from the center of the ceiling;
  • glue is applied around the perimeter and center of the profile;
  • the profile with the adhesive applied is aligned according to the marking and pressed to the ceiling;
  • so laid out a square of panels, and subsequent foam profiles;
  • sticking in the corner, at the joints is performed after cutting profiles;
  • after glue hardens, gaps between profiles are putty.

To finish and close the putty joints, you can paint the foam. If the profile has a rough rather than glossy structure, then the surface is pre-primed. The paint is applied in two or three layers with a roller. The first layer goes along the direction of light, the next – across the natural light.

Instructions from A to Z

In the interior of the kitchen

Together with various options for ceiling decoration, which require considerable investments, time and attracting qualified specialists, there is no less common, and well-proven way.

In a relatively short time, choosing a tile suitable for the room and preparing the ceiling for work, it is easy to understand this simple matter. Also in the article you will find information on how to stick products diagonally.

Finish

Sticking tiles on the ceiling begins with the right choice of high-quality polystyrene products.

The choice

The geometry of the square tile should correspond to the geometric parameters, that is, all angles should be 90 degrees, and the sides, of course, should have equal lengths. Without this, it is impossible to achieve a high-quality docking – however, the cracks can be closed with putty or acrylic sealant, but, we think, nobody needs extra dances with a tambourine.

The quality of the feedstock and the structure of polystyrene are evaluated, the topography of the product must be uniformly clear and even.

Homogeneous fine polystyrene grains, without voids, are an indicator of quality

A tile made with a violation of technology is characterized by the presence of defects (bumps, sinks, sagging or depressions) on the surface of the relief, as well as rounded or jammed corners, crumbling edges. Qualitatively, without gaps, it is not possible to lay and dock such a tile.

The sticker of products with defects is used to fill small areas along the walls and in inconspicuous places, if it is possible to cut the defective part.

Features and types

Modern polystyrene foam tile is a universal material for decorating the ceiling in different rooms:

  • It is especially popular in the living room, bedroom and study. Here, this design looks very profitable due to the visual increase in ceiling height.
  • Foam products are used to finish the ceiling in the kitchen, however, a protective laminated coating is applied to it.
  • When planning the decoration of a children’s room, the material is selected with a special sound-absorbing layer.
  • For a bathroom or toilet, smooth white or slightly corrugated tiles are used.
  • Such foam products are made in one of three ways that determine its properties.

Extruded from foam. For its manufacture, polystyrene blocks are taken and the necessary details are obtained by stamping. It is different:

  • low density;
  • low weight;
  • thickness ranging from 6 to 8 millimeters.

Extruded (see Extruded Ceiling Tile: Material Selection Criteria). It is pressed from a polystyrene strip. This type of density is higher, the surface is quite smooth and shiny, imitates the surface of marble, wood and other materials.

Injection. In this case, sintering of raw materials is carried out in special molds, without breaking the granules. Its surface acquires beautiful and clear relief patterns, tile thickness from 9 to 14 millimeters. Performed with straight forms around the perimeter, and after gluing to the ceiling, the seams are practically invisible.

Calculation and purchase of necessary materials

The calculation of the number of tiles for a particular room can be done by dividing the area of ??the room (length * width) by the area of ??one product. This manipulation is usually promptly provided by the seller, so you can stock up on only the size of the room before buying.

The most common size of ceiling tiles is 50 x50 cm. Typical factory packaging contains 1 sq.m. (4 pcs.), Or 2 sq.m. (8 pcs.).

Considering the possibility of factory marriage or marriage during installation, especially if the ceiling tiles are installed diagonally, depending on the area of ??the room and installation method, you should purchase 5-10% more material.

It is preferable to purchase a tile from one batch of production – the batch number, the number of meters and the production date should be indicated, for this an instruction is attached.

Tip: When purchasing tiles, it is logical to purchase made of the same material, similar in design, suitable in width and color ceiling skirting in the required quantity.

Sticking ceiling tiles also requires the purchase of an optimum adhesive.

How to choose the right glue

The gluing of ceiling tiles is possible to concrete, plaster, brick, wooden, metal, drywall and other substrates. Installation of polystyrene plates is carried out on facade adhesives, tile adhesive mixtures, liquid nails, mastics, silicone sealants, etc.

Popular Options

Attention. Glues containing organic solvents (acetone, gasoline, esters, etc.) dissolve polystyrene.

Specially for polystyrene, high-tech mounting adhesives (Titanium, Moment, etc.) on a polymer basis have been developed. They are well combined with any surfaces of ceilings, reliably hold a tile.

When choosing glue, first of all, you need to focus on the material from which the tile you bought is made. Probably the most versatile composition will be glue “liquid nails.”

The price of polymer adhesives is quite affordable.

Ceiling tiles are glued on a dry, clean, even, strong, and primed base.

Tool

Before gluing ceiling tiles, you should stock up on everything you need:

Beat cord for marking the surface. It is sold in construction stores, and in the kit is purchased chalk, which is poured into a container and dyes a thread for beating landmarks on any basis;

A construction knife cuts tiles perfectly, it is better to have an option with a blade width of 25 mm on hand, it is much tougher and more convenient to use. In the kit, purchase spare blades, as they become dull during operation;

Adjustable square – an indispensable tool if diagonal pasting is done with tiles. This device is fixed at any angle, which greatly simplifies the layout of tiles and eliminates errors in the cutting process;

This device allows you to set any angle when marking

The gun for sealant. With its help, liquid nails are applied, which will be used when gluing. The tool costs a little, but greatly simplifies and speeds up the workflow;

Roulette and pencil are used for measurements and marking. You can use a long ruler, but roulette is more convenient;

Since you have to work on the ceiling, you need a ladder or a table. The height of the device should be comfortable so that you do not rest against the surface with your head and do not stand with outstretched arms.

Ceiling preparation

When carrying out repairs in old rooms, the ceiling base, using a hard metal spatula, must be cleaned of old wallpaper, tiles or whitewash (if it is fragile and peels off). Flaking, loose areas, as well as crumbling seams and potholes should not be.

The cleaned ceiling of both the old and the new premises is covered with a broom (vacuum cleaner) and treated with a primer.

A dry, primed ceiling is inspected to identify the largest defects (displacement of floor slabs, cracks, bumps, concrete flows and other pronounced troubles).

The tile can also be glued to drywall, in which it is necessary to cover the seams

All irregularities of more than 3-5 mm, with the help of liquid mixtures, are leveled (read more here). Smaller potholes and sinks are able to hide ceiling tiles.

When installing seamless ceiling tiles, more careful leveling of the base is required.

After solidification of the mixtures, the repaired areas are again subject to priming. Soil is also subject to wooden, plywood, plasterboard and other ceilings.

Primed ceiling base provides a more reliable interaction with any adhesives.

Before sticking the tile to the ceiling, its location is determined.

Ceiling marking

How can I arrange

In rooms of the old type, it is very rare to find a room with the correct geometric shapes, therefore, in such rooms it is more rational to use a diagonal gluing method, in which the tile sticker starts from the center of the ceiling or from the installation point of the central chandelier.

How to tile diagonally? Everything is quite simple!

How to glue the ceiling tiles diagonally – it all starts with the markup

The first thing is the center of the room. This point is located at the intersection of two construction cords stretched from diagonally opposite angles.

Advice! There are frequent cases when the center of the ceiling and the location of the main chandelier do not match. In this case, you should be guided by the lamp, although exceptions are possible.

Next, we determine what we will have in the center – a solid tile or butt seam. The first option without cutting tiles is possible only with the chandelier removed.

Next, two lines strictly perpendicular to the walls and to each other drawn through the center of the ceiling are drawn. They will guide us at the beginning of work.

In the mounting option from the chandelier, the corners of the four tiles are cut off under the fasteners and power supply of the lighting device. At the subsequent stage of work, this place is covered with a decorative lining of the chandelier.

How to glue the ceiling tiles – cut so that it is sure to hide under the decorative lining of the chandelier

In fact, the main difference between mounting diagonally is trimming all the extreme elements, while the next option allows you to install whole tiles at least at two walls.

Faster and easier installation of plates – parallel to the walls. It is made from the wall, which is the most noticeable in the room. This method of installation is practical and convenient in small areas.

Mounting

If installation is carried out in the winter, then the tile must lie down in room conditions for at least two hours.

Before sticking the tiles to the ceiling, you should carefully read the instructions for using the adhesive. Gluing processes for adhesives from different manufacturers may vary slightly.

Some manufacturers of adhesive compositions recommend, within a few minutes after applying the composition to the surface, to withstand the adhesive for partial swelling for a while, and only then combine the parts with the ceiling. The technology of other adhesive manufacturers does not require this time.

Recommended for each individual type of polystyrene tiles, the adhesive is applied to the tiles and ceiling point, dotted or completely. Some types of tiles have special areas for applying glue on the mounting side.

Using a napkin or foam sponge, the tile with adhesive applied is firmly pressed around the entire perimeter to the ceiling so that there are no traces of punching on the front surface.

Protruding glue is removed immediately with a dry and clean cloth.

Sticking sequence

Just by marking, in the center of the ceiling or the location of the chandelier, the first tile is fixed. Following the markings, subsequent products are mounted tightly to the first plate.

To comply with the technology, during the installation process it is necessary to control the alignment of the parties and monitor compliance with the drawing, if any.

On the mounting side of some types of tiles there is a special marking in the form of arrows. When installing such a tile, the arrows should have the same direction as in the video.

Neighboring, in order to avoid displacements before the polymerization of the adhesive, it is convenient to temporarily fix with each other using masking (paper) tape.

The rows of slabs adjacent to the walls, in most cases, are cut. In such cases, preliminary, using a tape measure, measurements are made on the ceiling, and transferred to the tiles with a pencil. After cutting with a construction knife, the desired fragment is tried on to the designated place, and fixed to the glue.

At the subsequent stage of painting, at the junction of the ceiling and walls, a skirting board is mounted. The skirting board can be attached with the same glue on which the ceiling tiles are glued, but it is more efficient to use a special adhesive putty that can hide all the gaps between the skirting board and the relief.

The joints between the plates are filled, if necessary, with white acrylic sealants. The use of silicone sealant is not recommended.

Care is carried out using a vacuum cleaner with a soft nozzle, grease marks are removed with alcohol, other dirt is wiped with clerical washing gum. Water on some types of products is undesirable.

Knowing how to stick ceiling tiles, you can do all the work yourself with high quality. You should first familiarize yourself with the work of professionals using a thematic video.

How to glue ceiling tiles: step-by-step instructions

Repairing the house is a serious test for all residents. One of the steps in this complex process is the gluing of ceiling tiles. The use of foam ceiling trim is a budget option. But the assortment on the market is large, so everyone will choose a suitable look for themselves in color and design. If you want to keep such a repair for a long time, you need competent actions in the process of gluing.

Training

How to stick the ceiling tiles? This is the main issue that interests everyone who has decided to carry out repairs on their own. Ceiling decorating is better until the walls are tiled.

Provided that there will be no other interior change, you need to hide everything under polyethylene so as not to spoil it. The use of tiles is permissible on any surface. To tile fixed securely, it is worthwhile to prepare:

The chandelier is removed.

The old finish is removed and the entire perimeter is checked for the reliability of each element present. You need to carefully check the angles (this is usually the weakest zone).

If large gaps appear afterwards, they need to be coated.

After drying, an adhesive primer is used.

The flatness of the ceiling is estimated. If there are swings and convex zones, you need to level them using putty. This is done with large irregularities. In other cases, the tile will hide everything.

How to glue the ceiling tiles diagonally with your own hands? Everyone can do this, and even simple lime on the ceiling, provided that there is no shedding. In any case, each surface is pre-primed with an adhesive composition, for reliability and durability.

What ceiling tiles can be found in the store?

So, we have to get a good ceiling tile and high-quality glue. How to make a choice? Before you go shopping, everyone should know that tile happens:

Pressed. It is not too dense, and it is stamped, so it often comes across as defective.

Extruded. This tile is covered with a film. In the manufacturing process, polystyrene is used. This option is dense and smooth. Often create simulations for other materials – wood, marble, etc. A big plus is its moisture resistance.

Injection. Such models have patterns, as they are produced specially, and the thickness reaches 12 millimeters.

Seamless. This is the most expensive finishing material in this series. But it looks beautiful since there are no joints here.

Once the right type is selected, you need to understand how to glue the foam ceiling tile. Due attention will have to be paid to quality:

You need to inspect the packaging with the tiles so that the corners are even, otherwise there will be problems when pasting.

At the edges of the tile should not crumble. It is better to choose one that has small grains in its composition.

If you have a drawing, it must be clear and symmetrical.

Basically, companies produce standard parts of 50×50 cm. Following this size and knowing the area of ?? the ceiling, it is easy to calculate the required amount of material.

It is required to buy material with a margin, but with a small amount (10 percent). Each batch of the same tile may have slight differences. And if not enough, it will be difficult to find a similar one.

Which glue is suitable?

Not only the speed of finishing but also the durability depends on what type of adhesive will be purchased. You need to choose a not-too-thick consistency. But excessively liquid will not do. Such a mass will be convenient when applied where it is required with a thick and in other places a thin layer. Much will do:

You need to make a choice depending on the surface of the ceiling. If all the same, then a suitable option is liquid nails. For differences, putty is used. To hide the joints, ceiling skirtings are required.

How to start?

Before answering the question of how to glue the ceiling tile, you need to make a sketch – create a diagram of the ceiling, reflect on it the method of applying the finishing material:

Parallel.

Diagonally.

In a checkerboard pattern.

To mark everything, you will need a tape measure and a cord. Do not rely on clarity, otherwise it will turn out ugly. The presence of irregularities will ruin the view. How is each fixture done? It is believed that the methods for properly gluing ceiling tiles have their algorithm.

Parallel execution

The beginning is the corner that strikes the eye first. The process is carried out in several stages:

Glue is applied on all sides from the inside of the tile and in the middle. Extra is not necessary, otherwise he will come forward and make the joints uneven.

Press the tile and iron evenly around its perimeter so that the adhesive mass is distributed.

The next one joins and only after that is pressed. Everything must be done carefully, without breaking symmetry.

Next, we perform the same actions on the ceiling area.

After the full parts are pasted, you need to measure and glue the rest. Cut conveniently with a stationery knife. Walls may be uneven, so it’s best to pre-measure.

Diagonal application

How to glue the ceiling tiles? Different methods have the same beginning. You need to glue from the center of the room. Next – work on a simple plan:

The marking and the mounting process itself. The first tile is installed so that the corners stand in the middle of the line.

The second is placed along the marked marking lines.

After in order – the remaining components.

The necessary elements are cut along the edges.

At the end of the work, the baseboard is glued and the remaining glue is removed. It was already noted earlier: seamless tile is the most convenient in the installation process. After application, nothing additional is required. Other options imply a thorough perimeter scan. If there are gaps between the components of the finishing material, then they are removed when using sealant. It does not respond to water and fever. When filling existing holes, it is leveled, and excess is removed.

How to glue the ceiling tiles with your own hands in a checkerboard pattern? To do this, after marking the parts are mounted strictly along the axis. And the extreme row – from the prepared measured segments. To make the surface of the ceiling look beautiful, you need to apply the building level. But it is not so simple. Therefore, experts say that it will be easier initially to remove flaws and defects with a spatula.

Depending on the selected adhesive, the process of applying it to the surface of the tile is also built. On the back of the finishing material there are special protrusions for the adhesive mass. Application is done with dashed lines or a full layer. If the selected product is too liquid, then after distribution on the surface, wait two minutes and proceed to installation.

Important Tips

With the right approach to the process of fixing the tiles, you will get a quality result. Below are some quick tips to help you get things done quickly and well:

In order to work with the finishing material easily, you need to leave the tile in the room for about a couple of hours. She must acquire room temperature. After that, you can proceed to installation.

It turns out a beautiful combination if the tile is assembled from different colors. You can use any convenient gluing method for this.

According to the masters, the best adhesive material is liquid nails. They are used with a mounting gun.

If you decide to paste the ceiling, this is done immediately. Do not stop, otherwise cracks and nicks may form.

When gaps are smeared in some places, then when a sealant enters, it is immediately removed with a wet cloth. Because after it will be difficult to do it carefully.

In order for the tile to be firmly fixed, it is held not with hands, but with a bar.

To see the distribution of the adhesive composition on the tile, it is better to take it in color.

If foam tile is used, then after it it will not be possible to cover with water-based paint, as peeling will go.

Conclusion

So, we looked at different ways. How to glue the ceiling tiles is now clear. Everyone can cope with gluing tiles to the ceiling. The main thing is to prepare the necessary things before starting so that the process does not stand still.

How to glue the ceiling tiles? The main methods of gluing plates to the ceiling

Expanded polystyrene ceiling tiles are one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to decorate a ceiling. For example, unlike a stretch ceiling, it has a lower cost, and you can stick it on without even contacting specialists, but by doing all the work yourself. Want to learn how to glue a ceiling tile? To do this, you only need to carefully study this article.

But before you stick the ceiling tiles, you should carry out some preparatory work and think through all the nuances.

Tile selection

First of all, you need to decide on the type of tile that will meet your requirements. There are seamless and seam plates:

seamless have curly edges, therefore, when joining plates, their joints are practically not visible;

suture boards have smooth edges, which requires certain skills when combining them.

Also pay attention to the ceiling tiles. If you want to use it in the kitchen, then for these purposes it is better to purchase one that will be covered with a protective washable film.

Remember that sheets with a complex pattern will require more skill when laying, as you will need to properly adjust the pattern and glue the plates from certain sides.

Calculation of the required number of ceiling tiles

Having made a choice, proceed to determine the required number of sheets to cover the entire area of ??the ceiling. Make it easy. You only need to know the area of ?? the room and the parameters of each plate. The standard tile has dimensions 50 x 50 cm, therefore, its area is 0.25 m 2. To calculate the number of ceiling tiles, divide the room area by 0.25. Do not forget about possible gaps along the edges of the ceiling, if the result is multiple. Therefore, buy material with a margin (10-15%), because in addition to this, there are cases of breakage of plates in the process of working with them. Thus, you will protect yourself from repeated trips to the store.

Necessary facilities and tools
  • glue;
  • knife for cutting tiles;
  • ruler and pencil for marking.

Acquisition of glue needs to be approached especially carefully since it will depend on how well it can glue the tile and how long it will hold on afterward.

3 most popular types of glue:

  • Liquid Nails. This is the most economical way: no additional application tools are required.
  • Polymer glue. It is very common, it allows you to firmly and efficiently stick tiles to the ceiling.
  • Glue putty. It is convenient in that with it you can putty the seams formed during the gluing of plates.

Ceiling preparation

Before gluing the foam tile, it is necessary to prepare the surface.

The traditional way:

Clean the previous ceiling covering from paint, wallpaper or whitewash.

Level the ceiling, eliminate all bumps, get rid of cracks. To do this, use putty.

Apply a primer.

Define the center of the room and mark the main coordinates. Pull two threads from one corner to another. The point of their intersection will be the center.

A better option would be to skip the first two stages of preparation. Consider cases where you can use the simplified method:

If there is an old whitewash left on the ceiling, and you do not want to waste time removing it, then you can surely skip this stage. Better ground the surface. Then it is likely that all glued tiles will hold tight.

If your ceiling really has serious flaws, then, of course, it is better to invest in aligning it. However, if everything is not so bad, go directly to the third step. Tiles easily mask small cracks and bumps.

How to stick tiles on the ceiling?

After completing the preparatory work, proceed to gluing the plates. The hardest part here is getting started right. There are 2 basic gluing options.

To begin, consider how to stick ceiling tiles parallel to the walls.

This is the fastest and easiest way. Many people use it, starting work from one wall and laying sheets in a row, one after another. It is important not to leave gaps between the tiles and glue evenly. Apply glue on the back of the tile diagonally and along the perimeter.

You can start gluing from the center of the ceiling. It will turn out more symmetrically. Position the sheets so that the corners are in the direction of the pre-tensioned threads. If a chandelier hangs in the center of the ceiling, you will need to cut off the corners of the tiles around it. Next, continue gluing in a circle, and at the edges use pieces of plates if whole sheets do not fit.

There is another technique that allows you to answer the question “How to glue the tiles on the ceiling?”. It consists in gluing the plates diagonally. This option looks more interesting and original, although it takes a little longer.

Ceiling plates are glued by turning them at an angle of 45 °. Laying is carried out in relation to the axis to the corner. The result is a figure resembling an incorrect cross. After using all the whole sheets, the missing corner pieces in the shape of a triangle are glued.

Useful Tips

Instead of keeping the plate greased with glue on weight for 5 minutes, it is better to leave it in this form and wait until it is saturated, and then glue it to the ceiling. The glue will set in just 30 seconds.

If during gluing of ceiling tiles you have very noticeable seams, then sealing the joints with a special sealant using a syringe will be the right solution. So, the ceiling will last you longer.

To hide possible irregularities when joining the plates with the wall and make the transition smoother, use the ceiling plinth.

If you do not want your ceiling to turn yellow under the influence of electric light, protect it from the light bulb with a chandelier that provides such protection.

If defects appear on the tile, it can be replaced with a new one by carefully separating the old plate from the ceiling with a construction trowel.

We hope that the proposed methods for gluing ceiling tiles will not cause difficulties, and the result will please you.

How to glue the ceiling tiles

A beautifully decorated ceiling attracts the eye of visitors, and makes the room interesting and unique. One way to achieve this effect is to use ceiling tiles. Using minimal funds, you can quickly transform any room. But before you start gluing the tiles, you need to carefully prepare for this.

Ceiling surface preparation

Preparing the surface of the ceiling will save you from possible difficulties associated with the installation of tiles. In order for the work to turn out to be of high quality, and the result to be durable, follow the following instructions:

If the ceiling has old whitewash, paint, cladding, stucco, which is streaming, wallpaper, etc., remove so that nothing interferes with the tile.

After cleaning the surface of the ceiling, cracks, troughs, bumps, etc. may appear. Use putty to fix defects. It is ideal for leveling the ceiling, as well as for grouting damage of any complexity.

When the putty is completely dry (after 12 hours), prime the ceiling. Apply several layers at intervals for drying. The primer improves adhesion and the tile holds tight.

In some cases, the ceiling is not cleaned of whitewash but immediately proceeds to priming. So, they do it under one condition – the lime layer is in fairly good condition. This method does not guarantee a lasting result, but, as an option of quick cosmetic repairs, can be applied.

Determination of the ceiling area

The ceiling area is very easy to determine. To do this, measure its length and width using a tape measure, and then multiply the resulting numbers. This method is applicable if the room is in the form of an even rectangle.

But there are rooms that have cut corners or are L-shaped. To measure the area of ??a non-standard ceiling, draw a plan on a piece of paper, indicating the dimensions of all sides. Then divide the drawing into even rectangular sections. Determine the area of each rectangle and add the data. As a result, you get the total ceiling area.

Example:

You made the necessary measurements of the ceiling and received the following data: width = 4 m, length = 5 m. Multiply these numbers: 4×5 = 20 m2. Thus, the ceiling area is 20 m2.

Material quantity calculation

To understand how much material you need to buy, first determine the area of ??one tile. This is done in exactly the same way as with the ceiling. Most tiles have a standard size of 50×50. Multiply this data: 0.50 x 0.50 = 0.25 m2. As a result, the area of ??one tile is 0.25 m2.

Now you have the following data: 20 m2 – ceiling area and 0.25 m2 – tile area. Divide these numbers: 20 m2 / 0.25 m2 = 80 pcs. As a result, it turns out that you need to buy 80 tiles for a room of 20 m2.

But take your time to go to the store and buy just that amount of material. The fact is that during operation errors can occur that will lead to the breakdown of a certain number of tiles. Considering possible losses, buy material with a margin – 10% more.

Ways to arrange ceiling tiles

There are many ways to lay tiles on the ceiling. For example, you can arrange tiled squares in a checkerboard pattern or diagonally, combine different colors to create simple geometric shapes. There are plenty of options, but any method requires precise marking.

They usually lay tiles from the middle (except for rooms with a small area where installation is carried out from the corners), so first determine the central part of the ceiling. To do this, draw diagonals using the threads. Then draw perpendicular lines through the center. This layout is universal and will help arrange the tile in any convenient way.

The main ways of laying tiles:

  • This option is often applied and suitable for any room. Drawn lines allow you to control the laying of tiles in a diagonal direction. The result is smooth and beautiful.
  • Chess order. To create the effect of a chessboard, tiles of two colors are used. They begin to be glued from the center point of the ceiling, so that the edges are parallel to the walls. Checkerboard tiles hide well the imperfection of the ceiling surface.
  • The snake. In this embodiment, two combined or contrasting shades of tile are used. Gluing starts from the center, creating a graphic image of a snake twisted into a spiral. If you are unable to find a material of the right color, use a water based paint.

Rules for laying ceiling tiles

Do not glue tiles on whitewashing. This will cause the lime layers to peel off over time, and with them the tile. Before laying, it is necessary to clean the ceiling from chalk and prime.

Tiles are glued starting from the center of the ceiling or the location of the chandelier. It is necessary to control that the rows close to the walls have the same width.

Buy tiles with a margin. For ceilings with protrusions of various heights, an additional amount of material will be required. Also, during installation, it is easy to damage or spoil the tiles.

Tile installation

After painstaking preparation, a new stage of updating begins – the installation of tiles. The quality of the appearance of the ceiling depends on the work performed correctly. Follow the instructions below and you will succeed.

Select several tiles and carefully examine each. They should not have burrs on the edges. If you see these, cut them off, otherwise they will prevent you from making joints minimal.

Apply adhesive to the material. Distribute it around the perimeter, stepping back one centimeter from the edge, and also make several strips in the center. Give 1-2 minutes to thicken the glue.

Apply the first tile to the ceiling, aligning with diagonal and horizontal marks. Use a cloth to smooth for better bonding.

Glue the following tiles side by side in the same way, creating a central square.

Navigate the laid tiles to stick the rest. Do not forget about the layout, periodically leveling the material.

When approaching the edge of the ceiling, you need to trim the tile. First, try on and then cut. Try to trim so that the gap between the edge of the tile and the wall is minimal. The baseboard will then close it.

After installation is complete, allow the glue to dry well.

Jointing

Performing the work, perhaps, it was not possible to qualitatively make seams. As a result, a ceiling is visible between the joints of the tiles. It will be possible to fix the deficiencies with the help of a white sealant. It is sold in spray cans, and is equipped with a special elongated nozzle, with which it is easy to penetrate into the cracks. To work with sealant you will need a gun.

All you need to do is gently squeeze a uniform layer of white compound between the joints. The sealant closes the gaps, and at the same time strengthens the tiles on the ceiling.

Ceiling Tile Painting

Having completed the correction of defects with seams, you can leave everything as it is. But, if you want to decorate the surface, and complement it with various shades, then the most affordable way is to paint the tiles.

As a coloring agent, aqueous emulsion formulations based on acrylic or latex can be used. They do not emit a pungent odor and are resistant to wet cleaning. But first, prepare the surface of the tiles by applying a primer coat.

For painting, it is better to use a roller with a foam surface. It will help to apply a uniform coat of paint. The principle of operation is the same as when painting wallpaper. To keep the ink composition well, apply a minimum of two coats. Thus, it will turn out to make a unique geometric pattern that will surprise any visitor.

Ceiling Tile Maintenance

Any housewife knows that it is important not only to be able to glue the tiles beautifully but to maintain it in good condition. The tile ceiling needs regular maintenance, this will extend the service life, and preserve the original novelty.

During operation, dust gradually accumulates on the tiles. The result is a blackened surface that is unpleasant to look at. You can be poured by neighbors from above, if you do not take timely action, rust stains that cannot be removed will appear on the tile.

To avoid all these problems and not to re-tile the tiles, follow some simple tips:

  • Dry once a month using a vacuum cleaner or a brush.
  • Wet once every two months using a special mop.
  • Do not use solutions containing caustic substances. It is safe to use dishwashing detergents for cleaning.
  • Clean areas with patterns with a sponge or soft rag soaked in a solution.

After each wet cleaning, moisture remains on the surface of the tiles (especially in hard-to-reach recesses), which must be wiped off. To do this, it is convenient to use paper napkins. Wipe the surface and patterns thoroughly so that there are no wet stains.

Ceiling tiles are glued quite easily, so everyone can cope with this task with minimal experience. The main thing is to prepare the surface well and make the marking correctly. The result is not long in coming. You will get a room with a unique ceiling, which no one has. Remember to maintain it by cleaning it regularly from dust. And you can enjoy the result for many years!
